Dog Bite Overview
Dog bites and other animal bites are a growing problem which presents a serious risk of injury, particularly to children.
According to the
American Veterinary Medical Association:
- There is a dog in 1 of every 3 US homes.
- Children are the most common victims of serious dog bites.
- Almost half of all children are bitten before 18 years of age.
- Dog bite injuries are the third most common reason children are admitted for emergency care, behind only bike accidents and sports injuries.
- Seventy percent of fatal dog attacks and more than half of bite wounds requiring medical attention involve children.
The
Centers for Disease Control estimate that more than 4.7 million people are
bitten by dogs every year, and that 800,000 of these bites are serious enough to require medical attention.
Given the prevalence of these attacks and the severity of the injuries they cause, dog bites should be reported and their owners subjected to full civil and criminal accountability for their animal's behavior. Dangerous animals have a propensity to attack again, and any failure to prosecute an attack to the fullest only passes the problem on to the next victim. If you or your children have been injured by a dog or other animal, take action right away, contact
San Diego dog bite lawyer Jeffrey R. Frank. Statutes of limitation apply to dog bite and animal attack cases, and failure to take prompt action can result in a loss of both your rights to compensation and your rights to establish the owner's liability for criminal or civil penalties.
